PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management) is a diploma course in the management stream. Post Graduate Program in Management(PGPM) and Master of Business Administration(MBA) are management courses at the master level and are business-oriented courses. All the courses have similar outcomes employment-wise, but there are some subtle differences among these courses.
MBA vs Post Graduate Diploma in Management
The major differences between these two management courses are as follows:
1. Degree vs Diploma
At the end of the Master of Business Administration program, candidates are offered a degree, whereas, in PGDM, candidates are awarded a diploma. In India, institutes like IIMs, Xavier, and most of the autonomous colleges offer diploma courses. But now IIMs can offer degrees instead of diplomas after the Indian government passed an act that allows them to do so.
MBA course curriculum is designed by the university the college is affiliated with and all the colleges affiliated with this university will have the same syllabus. Whereas colleges offering diploma courses can design the curriculum according to the industry requirements. PGDM has the upper hand here, as the curriculum of this course gets updated along with the requirements of the industry.
Since most of the colleges offering MBA programs are affiliated with a university. So these colleges will be properly accredited. But in the case of diploma courses, most of the colleges are autonomous, so smaller colleges may not have proper accreditation status. So the candidate has to be careful before joining these diploma courses offered by autonomous colleges.
The core subjects of both courses are the same. But, the MBA course focuses more on theoretical and technical aspects, whereas the latter focuses on practical approaches depending upon the market requirements.
The MBA program is more affordable when compared to the diploma program as most of the colleges offering MBA programs are government-approved universities and colleges.
Even though there are differences, both management programs have equal value in the corporate world. But you have to choose the right course that supports and improves your professional career.
